Burton is about The Captain-General: The Career of John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, from 1702 to 1711.

This new and scholarly interpretation of the significance of Marlboroughs career under Queen Anne has been made possible by the discovery of fresh evidence about the structure of politics in the later Stuart period, and the authors own research into the development of British strategy during the War of the Spanish Succession of 1701-1713. Marlborough was created Captin-General in 1702, and the next ten years - until his ignominious dismissal in 1711 - represent the peak of his spectacular career. In detailed accounts of Marlboroughs campaigns throughout this war, Dr.

Burton stresses his tactical genius and great strategic sense, revealing aspects of his strategy which other historians, including the late Sir Winston Churchill, have sometimes underplayed. Dr. Burton shows, too, how Marlboroughs bold and unorthodox strategy was constantly hampered by lack of support both from home and from Englands allies abroad.

Above all, he seeks to demonstrate the important of military factors in history, and to show that not even Marlboroughs undoubted genius could overcome the limitations they imposed upon the political outcome of the war. The information which Dr. Burton provides on military organisation and the mechanics of war at that time does much to clarify the statistical interpretations of the battles which took place during Marlboroughs campaigns.
